In a potentiometric titration, the pH is monitored as acid or base is being added to a system. It is a common misconception that neutralization always occurs at a pH of 7. Depending on the type of acid and base being combined, neutralization can either occur at 7, above 7, or even below 7. If neutralization corresponds to the point on the graph where the pH change is most rapid, is the pH of the neutralized solution for graph (b) at 7, above 7, or below 7?
